I (34M) have been married to my wife, Laura (32F), for six years. We have a solid relationship, and she’s always been respectful to my family, even when things felt a bit tense.

My younger sister, Emily (28F), is getting married soon. Our parents passed away years ago, so I’ve always helped her financially when I could. Over time, I paid for part of her college tuition, helped with her rent during tough months, and recently, I agreed to help with her wedding expenses.

A few weeks ago, Emily invited me out for coffee to discuss the wedding details. That’s when she casually mentioned that Laura wouldn’t be invited to the ceremony.

I was shocked and asked why. Emily said she wanted a “small, drama-free wedding” and claimed my wife was “too opinionated” and might “make things awkward.” This completely caught me off guard, because Laura has never caused any issues at family events.

I told Emily that excluding my wife was disrespectful. She replied that it was her wedding and she could invite whoever she wanted. I agreed with that — but I also said I wouldn’t feel comfortable paying for a wedding my spouse wasn’t welcome at.

Emily immediately got upset and accused me of trying to control her big day with money. She told other relatives that I was abandoning her and ruining her wedding over “something small.”

Now my extended family is divided. Some say I’m right to stand by my wife, while others think I should just pay, attend alone, and keep the peace.
