The Christmas Bonus That Destroyed our Office

Last week in Austin
during our tiny marketing agency’s Christmas potluck
my boss handed out envelopes.
Everyone thought they were the usual ¢50 Starbucks gift cards.
Instead, they were bonuses and mine was missing.
Everyone around me gasped as they opened theirs.

Here’s the twist: later that night one of my coworkers accidentally forwarded me an internal spreadsheet.
My name was marked “pending disciplinary note —
personal conflict with supervisor.
” The note? “Employee refused to work unpaid weekend hours twice.”
So my “punishment” for not doing free labor was losing a Christmas bonus.
The next day I confronted my boss.
She didn’tdeny it. She said, “If you want to grow here, you have to show commitment.”
When I told her this felt retaliatory

she said : “If you’re unhappy, there are plenty of agencies hiring.
” My hands shook with anger. Now HR wants to “review the situation” but won’t promise anything.
My coworkers are split — half think I should stand up for myself,
half think fighting it could cost everyone their bonuses next year.
And here’s the decision: I received an offer yesterday from another agency for $12,000 more per year.
But leaving means the rest of my team will be swamped and maybe lose clients.
Staying means accepting a boss who punishes boundaries.
